Helen Keller said: ‘Children who hear, acquire language without any particular effort; while the little deaf child must trap the words by a slow and often painful process.' It is a long journey from naming an object to achieving literary efficiency.
Taking inspiration from this, our founders, Dr. M.N Gogate and Dr. Bhaiyasaheb Gune conceived the noble idea of starting a school for the children who are deficient of hearing. What makes this project unique is its commitment to make children speak effectively *without using sign language.
Founded on this very objective was The Rotary Deaf Nursery, eventually renamed as ‘Late Shri Kamlakar Nevagi Karnabadhir Shishu Vidyalaya’ in the year 2018. The school operates under the management of Rotary Samaj Seva Kendra and the Rotary Club of Kolhapur.

So, what makes us different and more effective? We believe in early intervention. We conduct tests like OtoAcoustic Emissions (OAE) and Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) at our Speech and Hearing Centre at RSSK, Nagala Park, Kolhapur. After extensive speech and language training till the age of 6 years, these children graduate to mainstream government schools, where they interact and compete shoulder to shoulder with other children. Few of our ex-students have even secured top ranks among them in exams.

The school is not supported by any government grants or aid which puts financial restraints on the developmental facilities we can provide for the children with. Expenses incurred over good quality hearing aids, maintenance of the machine and battery can put a huge burden on necessitous parents. Also, parents from rural areas around Kolhapur and other nearby districts find it very inconvenient to commute every day or rent a house in the city just for schooling their special child. Given these reasons, most of them helplessly prefer to keep their children out of school.

Education is the backbone of society. We Rotarians commit ourselves to the gift of education through our TEACH and Literacy programs. If you can commit even a small amount towards the “Adopt a Child” scheme, you can sponsor a child’s school fees and device maintenance charges for one year.

This deaf nursery has a total strength of 30 students as of now. Under this scheme, you can contribute towards one child’s bright future by donating just Rs. 12,000 a year. Most of the students come from economically backward background and need financial assistance. Teacher's traning and techinical updation is required from time to time. Parent trainig programs are organised periodically. Also we need funds for Infrastructure Development. The donation is eligible for exemption u/s 80G.
